I have to take a break from reminiscing about Iceland to share what’s going on right now. We’ve been accumulating freezing rain and drizzle for the past few days. This morning the sun is out, and turning every ice-coated branch into a crystal chandelier. It’s beautiful – but these trees are carrying a lot of extra weight right now. The young pines have bent over until their crowns touch the ground. The direct sunlight and the growing breeze are causing the ice to crack and shed with a constant clatter, and then occasionally a huge chunk will break loose — or worse, an entire branch or tree will give in to the load and come crashing down.

We’re hoping we don’t lose a lot of trees – but in the meantime, it’s gorgeous. Click on any of the shots below for a larger version.

Stay safe out there!
