It's cold outside! Ice crystals on glass.

Waning Wolf
The first full Moon of 2018 was a Supermoon, and also the Wolf Moon. Here, the visible ragged crater edges on the western (top) flank indicate this is no longer full - it's technically a waning gibbous. But it's in the single digits out there, I wouldn't be surprised if the wolves are still about!

New Year’s Tradition
Where I come from (not necessarily where I AM), eating black eyed peas on New Year's Day brings good luck for the year. Who else had some? It's great that little cultural things like this persist even as the world gets smaller and homogenized. Happy New Year everybody!

He-Cardinal
Not to be outdone, this male northern cardinal quickly followed his mate from yesterday. Unless she's on a nest, mated cardinals stay close, within 30 feet or so, and often call to each other to keep track. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott #wildlife #cardinal #bird #outdoors #nature #getoutthere
She-Cardinal
As the temperatures have dropped, our feeders have seen increased traffic, like this beautiful female northern cardinal. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Missing the Snow
It's been almost 2 weeks, and I miss the snow already!
Campfire Oysters
They're a little camouflaged, but nothing beats oysters cooked directly on a campfire!
Wilderness Survival
My home for tonight. Wilderness Survival training trip!
Grounded
The shed flight feather of a common gull. Simple and elegant in its design, part of an intricate machinery that enables flight - even with a few parts missing. Snowy Pine
Taken while the snow was still falling. This kind of heavy wet snow can be particularly damaging to trees, as it adds so much weight to the branches. This small pine was holding strong. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott

Winter is Coming
Not sure what happened to this whitetail deer, but it happened a long time ago. For us, the wilderness is a place to enjoy, and recreate. To the animals that live here, it's home - but it also holds a daily struggle for survival.
