Last day of what turned into “bird week”! This Barred Owl is stuck somewhere between rehab and captivity. Like birds in many wildlife rehab organizations, the owl was saved after a car accident, but can’t fly on her own, and so is now dependent on humans. She serves as an educator, giving many people their only up-close look at her species. We learn to care about what we know.
These owls are common in the east, and make the distinctive “Who cooks for you, Who cooks for y’all…” calls often heard in forest areas at night.
