A nice way to finish the week, with a shower and rainbow just before our closing campfire (and outstanding original skits from both Scouts and adults)! It's been a good week! flying-squirrel.org (Note: this was originally pushed to Facebook, Yonder, and Instagram on 6/30, but couldn't go out elsewhere due to a WordPress issue. Waterfront
I've spent this week shooting rifles and arrows, paddling canoes and kayaks, hiking up mountains, cooking (including baking birthday cakes) on fires, playing games, building things with logs and rope. Tonight will be my 5th consecutive night in a tent. These Scouts have got it good! flying-squirrel.org (Note: this was originally pushed to Facebook, Yonder,…Read more Waterfront
Woodcarving
Keeping entertained with a pocket knife in the woods. This little guy is a long way from finished, but a long way from a block of wood too! flying-squirrel.org (Note: this was originally pushed to Facebook, Yonder, and Instagram on 6/28, but couldn't go out elsewhere due to a WordPress issue. Sorry for being a…Read more Woodcarving
Summer Triangle
The "Summer Triangle" rising above the lake, with the Milky Way just emerging from the haze on the horizon. Just right of center, the apex is Altair, in Aquila, the Eagle. Above and to the left, Deneb is the tail of cross-shaped Cygnus, the Swan, and above, Vega and the parallelogram of Lyra, the Lyre.…Read more Summer Triangle
Office With A View
I feel like I've been slacking lately. The "real" job has been demanding of time - I haven't been getting out much, and have been posting less. But I have the opportunity to be out in the woods this week, working with Scouts. A different kind of work, with blooming lilypads in the "office"! flying-squirrel.org…Read more Office With A View
He’s Back
Once again taken at dusk, and this time through a rain-spattered window - our resident Great-Horned Owl is back. He was being pestered by a pair of mockingbirds, and flew off shortly after this was taken. So cool to have him around! Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Summer Storms
It is the season that thunderstorms are a daily occurrence. Lynn was able to time this shot just right, catching a simultaneous cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground strike just offshore at Myrtle Beach, SC. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Day Lilies
Another summer bloomer - Day Lilies! So named because each bloom only lasts for a single day. They are also pretty tasty - the unopened blooms, the flowers, and the tubers (day lilies grow from little fingerling-potato-like tubers as opposed to bulbs) are edible, raw or cooked as a vegetable. Not just edible, but really…Read more Day Lilies
Eastern Cottontail
I haven't been able to count the rabbits around the house with any certainty, but they're always out at dawn and in the evening. They make me happy. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Mimosa
Mimosa trees started blooming this week. Their delicate pink flowers highlight roadsides and field edges. The mimosa is one of few touch-sensitive plants. Lay your finger on the center of one if its fern-like leaves, and they will fold closed in response. Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Smoke
Campfire smoke highlights the sun's rays through the trees. The smell of dinner cooking is starting to fill the air. It's been a good day!
Equal Billing
A couple weeks ago, I shared a picture of a male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. What I didn't know at the time (because it was taken a day later, and not downloaded immediately), was that Lynn also got a very impressive shot of the FEMALE. Here she is! Photo Credit - Lynn Abbott
Soccer, Interrupted
Sometimes you don't have to go looking. This duck, full-sized but not quite fledged, walked alone across a busy highway to interrupt soccer practice. We presume it was looking for food. Practice sort of fell apart for a while, as you can imagine.
Rappahannock Sunset
(This was supposed to post Friday night, but had troubles with the app!) Along the Rappahannock. Going to have some fun on the river this weekend!
Drink Your Tea!
A Roufous-Sided Towhee is easier heard than seen - their territorial call of "Drink Your Teeeeeaaa!" is loud and unmistakable. Caught this one in mid-song!
