Is She Gone?

DSC_1070.JPG

Groundhog, Woodchuck, Whistle Pig… they’re actually a large, lowland marmot, closely related to ground squirrels.  Think of a large, solitary prairie dog and you’re actually not far off.  Groundhogs are expert burrowers, and never venture too far from the safety of their dens.  Right about now, litters of 2-6 helpless, fur-less kits (also, “chucklings”!) are being born – this one MAY be a new mother, making sure the coast is clear before leaving her burrow to grab lunch.
