A short post to share some audio! During the weekend camping and sailing last week, we had an early wakeup call at 4am, when a Great Horned Owl set up shop in a tree directly over my tent, and started making territorial declarations in a duet with another owl about 200 yards away across an inlet. At first I just smiled and ignored it, but eventually I mustered the energy to roll over and hit “record” on my phone. You can hear both owls.
This went on for about an hour. As one of my fellow campers put it – at first it was pretty cool. After a half hour, the novelty had worn off! 🙂
Anyway, here is what a Great Horned Owl sounds like when it’s staking out territory. Plain audio file and link to YouTube clip are both below.

You’ve certainly documented an interesting piece of wildlife here.
Well done, Troy!

Thanks – good thing the owl was patient enough to let me wake up and actually get the motivation to record it. 🙂

About a year ago, we had one staked out on our roof. I woke up sort of confused, then marveled for a while, then just wanted to go back to sleep. I still think it’s cool. Great recording!

That was my reaction for a long time – if this one hadn’t been so persistent, I never would’ve woken up enough to actually do anything about it. 🙂 They’re always cool, thanks for sharing!
